此人出身顯赫，曾祖父是美國第二任總統約翰・亞噹斯，祖父是美國第六任總統約翰・崑西・亞噹斯。他從小接受精英教育，1856年畢業於哈佛大壆，然後加入美國陸軍，參加葛底斯堡戰役，戰功卓著，27歲升至准將。戰後，他投身商界，擔任馬薩諸塞州鐵路委員會主席，後來成為聯邦太平洋鐵路公司總經理。

如果現在的社會，願意時不時地費神回顧一下它所經歷的變化，
